As an international student in China, it is important to understand and comply with both national and local laws and regulations, as well as the rules set by your university. The responsibility for managing student behavior is shared among local exit/entry administrations, police stations, and your educational institution.

Entry Process at Chinese Immigration Checkpoints

China’s immigration process is organized into separate lanes for Chinese citizens and foreign nationals, with international students required to use the foreign nationals lane. Prior to arrival, passengers must complete the “Foreigners’ Entry Application Form”, typically provided during the flight or available at airport counters, and submit it upon reaching customs. Immigration officers may inquire about the purpose of your visit, your contact person in China, your accommodation details, and other relevant information. It’s important to have clear answers and supporting documents, such as your visa, admission letter, or hotel reservation. Once cleared, proceed efficiently through the checkpoint, retrieve your luggage promptly, and comply with any required security screenings. Arriving at School

Once you arrive in the country, you can choose from various transportation options, such as taxis, subways, and buses. Depending on where you land, you might also need to take an intercity train or a connecting flight to reach your destination. Be sure to check with your school for specific transportation details. For information on public transportation, refer to the “Transportation” section.

Registration for New Students

Upon arrival in China, new students should promptly visit their admitting school to complete the registration process and other necessary enrollment steps. The exact times, locations, and required documents will be provided in each school’s admission notice. Typically, the following documents are needed for registration:

  • Valid passport and visa (X1 or X2), both original and copies
  • Admission notice, both original and copies
  • Foreign Students’ Application for Visa to China (JW201 or JW202 form), original
  • Passport-sized photos
  • Payment for registration, tuition, medical insurance, and accommodation fees, due at registration
  • "Foreign Health Examination Record (original, required for students staying in China for over 6 months)

Ensure you prepare and submit any additional documents as required by your admitting school.

Medical Examination

According to Chinese government regulations, students holding an X1 visa are required to undergo a medical examination. Students can complete the examination in their home country before arriving in China and submit the original “Foreign Health Examination Record” in Chinese or English during registration. Afterward, they must visit the local entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau’s health care center for a re-examination. If the submitted health certificate does not meet the required standards or was not completed before arrival, a new examination must be conducted at the local health care center. The health care center will issue a “Verification of Foreign Health Examination Record,” which is necessary for applying for a residence permit in China.

You may need to bring the following materials for the medical examination

  • Your passport
  • Your health examination documents from your home country
  • A two-inch bareheaded ID photo (can be taken on-site)
  • A copy of your admission notice or proof issued by the school

In most cases, schools will arrange a group medical examination for students. If you miss the group check, you will need to visit the local entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau to complete the process. X1 visa holders must complete their residence permit application within 30 days of entry, so it’s important to finish the medical examination promptly after arrival. Students holding an X2 visa are not required to undergo a medical examination.

Medical Care

In accordance with national regulations, international students studying in China for more than six months are required to purchase medical insurance. The school will provide guidance and assistance with the insurance purchase process.
